Chafee Direct Cash Award of $1,750

OCFS is excited to announce the expansion of eligibility for youth ages 18 and 19 in foster care to apply for the Chafee Direct Cash Award of $1,750. This population will now be eligible to apply for the Chafee Direct Cash Award that was made available under the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021. These funds were made available for eligible individuals with foster care experience impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.  

To qualify for the Chafee Funds Program (CFP) applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old, but have not reached their 23rd birthday AND
  • Have been in foster care in New York State at age 14 or older.

Please note, awards made are a one-time cash assistance and no additional awards will be made for individuals who have already received a payment
