Four New Trainings to Increase Your Skills and Awareness When Working with Youth

  • Health, Mental Health, Resources for Parents, Guardians, Families, Resources for Professionals

Josh Shipp, a former youth in foster care who is now a youth empowerment motivational speaker, once said: "Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story."

You may read this and wonder “what does it take to be a caring adult?” Part of the equation is increasing your awareness about the experiences of youth in foster care and identifying strategies and skills that will assist you.

The Professional Development Program (PDP) has created four new virtual 1-hour trainings that will increase your awareness and provide strategies and skills that will help you to become a caring and positive adult resource.

“An Introduction to Trauma-Informed Healing Centered Engagement (HCE)” will increase your knowledge of:

  • how the system can perpetuate trauma
  • trauma and trauma responses
  • Healing Centered Engagement (HCE) which moves the focus from “what has happened to you” to “what is right with you” when supporting youth

“Relational Strategies to Build Trust and Connection” will increase your ability to:

  • guide youth toward positive behavioral responses
  • display empathy to promote social competence
  • reduce the need for corrective actions

“Networking and Mapping Resources” will help you to increase your knowledge of:

  • networking
  • the importance of permanent connections
  • the three houses approach
  • resources available to youth

“An Introduction to Regulating Emotions” will increase your knowledge and understanding of emotional regulation and emotional reactivity, as well as increase your ability to:

  • recognize when a youth is struggling to self-regulate
  • acknowledge a youth’s triggers and assist them to develop the skills they need to self-regulate
  • respond proactively rather than reactively when a youth is struggling to self-regulate
  • help youth cope with emotional responses to situational triggers
